I would like to start working in a local studio. I honestly have no idea how to go about this process, although I do plan to put together a portfolio of all portraits that I have. Any additional advice is much appreciated!

Why don't you ask at a local studio, how to get a job their and what you have to do to or show. So you can easily work on your portfolio, take your best shots and get back. :)
Yes that's a good idea. I figured there has to be a few people here who have started out this way and could give me input based on their experiences. I'd just like to have an idea of what to expect instead of going in blindly (although I'll do it if I have to!).
If you dont know it, learn photoshop... Alot of studios will hire just for that. Also, dont expect much pay (really, if any) at first. Working a little at first, on a volunteer basis until you have some experience (if you can afford this) will definately put you in a great position shortly down the road. If you can get paid, GREAT! Also, make sure that it is a studio that has the style you have or want to develop. Dont just go for some bum studio that wont benifit you, and that you wont benifit. Choose wisely! GOOD LUCK!

Now I'll take any input on putting together the portfolio itself. The only idea I had was to do it like a scrapbook, although not frilly at all. Just putting the pics on black paper in an album. Is this a bad idea?
