My damn computer crashed today, well, actually it boots up, it starts to load Windows, and then it fails. It writes no data can be read. What should I do exactly?

I have a 80GB Maxtor, first partition is 8MB, second is 72MB. What should I do? Shall I save all datas both on C: and D: or shall I save data just on C: and format just the first partition? Does anybody have any expreiences? Another computer can read the winchester, but I was recommended not to write anything on it. Shit, this is what I needed just before my exams.

HELP!!! - I will come back later before I go home to do some stuff about this winchester.

Will the pc start up in Safe mode ? If it does I would then move all the data I want to safe onto the D Drive then wipe the C drive and reinstall Windows (as long as you have all of your drivers etc )

Agwright, thank you for your suggestion. I will try the safe mode, my guess is that it doesn't find something that it needs for the bootup, because the hard drive has been damaged. Do you think it would be safe to move the data to the D drive? It's the same winchester, just different partition. I don't know exactly which part has been damaged, I guess it was because of a small power-cut and I don't remember which partitions were used at the moment.

If booting to safe mode doesn't work, you may need to replace the HD. If you do replace the HD, once you have Windows installed on the new HD, you can install the old one as a slave, and probably read data off of that before you try to re-format it.

Thank you very much, Spazmo99, I will try it. If I don't get another HD I will archive everything impoertant from C to D, now I have put it in my Mum's computer and I can red it. I hope nothing serious here. :-)) I was just very nervous in the morning, because I had to print a homework but I have managed it.
