The zoom on the kit lens is moderate for a Digital Camera. at 28mm (35mm eq) it is actually a wider angle lens than what is offered on most consumer digital cameras.
Along with the Kit lens, I also have the Canon 75-300mm zoom lens. It really gives you a nice range with these two lenses and wont break the pocket book. You can always upgrade with more lenses later as money comes in. I hope this information helps you with you decision.
The Kit lens really is a nice lens for the money. It's fairly sharp and the focus is very quick with it.
I'd just like to second bill's comments. I also have the kit lens and the Canon 75-300mm. Very happy with both. The only other lens I really wish I had was a good macro lens, but that will come with time. :-) The 18-55 kit lens does pretty good for now.

OK, click my name, the only pic I've entered so far was done with that lens. I like it personally. Very good MTF chart and crisp. Very cheap build but so far seems durable enough if you pay a bit of attention to how you handle it.
I don't really know much about lens' and dslr cameras, so I have another question. I was at Wal Mart earlier this afternoon and saw an Nikon 70-300mm lens, would that work on a Canon?
I saw that and no, it wouldn't. I would find the lens you want and then go to www.pricegrabber.com and find a good price for it. Sometimes the prices on EBay can get more than you can find the new ones on there.
