I've decided that as much as I love me 17 inch viewsonic LCD, it's just not showing me everything accurately.
So,, I'm shopping for a CRT that is in the $500 range (all I can afford) that will be better. I realize I can't get a "real" pro, high end monitor for that money. But what is the best I can do.
I've been reading reviews and am now so confused I don't know which models to go look at.

I think you should be able to get an excellent 19" display for that price, or with some digging, a very good 21" display. I very much prefer the Trinitron-based monitors, however I think I would stick with Sony as some of the others using the Sony tube don't achieve the same level of performance. The Sony CDP G400 seems to be a good unit, but availability seems to be severely lacking.
I actually picked up my Sony E500 (21") display for about $550, but it's a discontinued model. Their newer 21" models are either more expensive or not spec'ed as well.
I would be hesitant to buy a monitor online, I'd rather see the model in action, and have a local seller to turn to if there are problems. I also am leery about possible shipping damage on CRT monitors. If it gets banged around performance may be affected without apparent external damage.
I agree kirbic, I'd not buy one on line. We have a pretty good variety of stores here so I should be able to purchase locally.
I definitely want to look at them, I intend to take a cd w/ me with test shots on it to view.
the problem now is how the heck I'm going to fit it on my desk! ah well the trials and tribulations just continue. :}
Was your viewsonic digital? Take a look at the Samsung LCD line before you go CRT! I have the 191T and love it. About $650 or less now. Mine are Dell branded.
I recently bought a LG 17" flatron monitor. I wanted one for 2 years and i don't regret it. I' ve never worked on a professional monitor like the one designed specifically for photographer etc. but for a consumer CRT monitor, I personnally never seen something better.

Just in case you don't know about this:
Make sure you decide whether you want a aperture grille or shadow mask monitor before you buy. AG grille's have one vertical and one horizontal lines which are visible when you have a large white area; for that reason, I've always searched for monitors that are SM. The Trinitron type tubes are AG. Just load a notepad window with no text and maximize it to see the AG lines.
My last CRT was a Samsung 19" short depth SM type monitor, which I found to be very good.
