Yeah, don't just be careful not to post it a week before the challenge opens -- You should be careful not to take your shot a week before the challenge opens - that's the real reason for the DQ!

Just my personal opinion, but I think the anonymity is important, and a number of us frequent other sites. So I personally have waited until after the challenge. If anything, the real value in posting to another site would be to post before the actual challenge starts, so you could incorporate feedback, not during the voting! I haven't done that either though, since I hope the site stays anonymous, having seen what non-anonymity does to voting on other sites.
I was just thinking about this today. I use deviant art and thought about posting my Water submission there to see what kind of feedback I would get. I decided against it (because my signature on here has a link to my gallery there), and just showed it to some friends that I know don't use this site through a direct link to the picture on my personal webpage.
But I don't really think there is anything wrong with it if you don't try to show it to people here somehow.
