I've noticed on a few of my photos (and some others - especially b/w photos) that when I view them from my home PC and then from another (work, friends, etc) PC that they appear "lighter" (contrast) on my home PC than other places.

I've played with the monitor settings, but it results in a negative impact on all my other applications...

Any thoughts?

Did you check the Gamma-Correction of the various computers?
You should adjust it a way, that the grey-scale shown at the bottom of each voting-page on DPC has the full dynamic range, i.e. that you can see all shades from white to black.

This is what monitor calibration is for - though it only works if all the monitors are calibrated, and with similar gamma curves
