I am also not sure what this means: is it the shot which must be simple (not many elements), or the subject itself (people will recognize the subject itself as "plain or simple")?
I´m thinking about it until now and I can´t reach to reasonable point to it. The challenge description says: Clarity of expression; lack of sophistication; absence of complexity; plainness. Capture the essence of simplicity in your photograph.
So to me the phrase: Clarity of expression; lack of sophistication; absence of complexity; plainness. is concerning to subject. It needs to be simply, but obvious. On the same way, only to me, the second phrase: Capture the essence of simplicity in your photograph. is concerning to the shot itself. Really I can imagine a good subject until now. I feel that... I will be out of this challenge too.
I struggled with this as well, but what I ended up with was a simple shot of a subject that also conveyed simplicity. I'm hoping that the double up will gain me more points. And while some of us might have had a difficult time with it, that didn't stop 117 of us (so far!) from entering :-)
I'm just wondering if soft focus could apply here with simplicity?

Sure, I think I gathered from people that a simple subject was what was expected. Just think: what is simple. An abstract, simple geometric form would be simplicity; or any photo with one clear focal point, and nothing else to distract. Or something that people would look and say: that's really simple. But beautiful.
That excludes any picture or likeness of the US tax code, or any legal document.
