I know I wondered what "free study" meant when I first joined DPC, and someone else just created a thread to ask, and I've seen others do the same thing since I've been here.
How about adding "The free study has no theme - just stay within the editing rules and the terms of service, and have fun!" to the description instead of just "N/A" (the current one notwithstanding, since it has some explanation about expert editing)?
