Of course it occured in the middle of a paid shoot after the band had traveled 2 hours
but everything was going okay until my shutter stopped working.
I probably had taken about 30 shots before it happened.
After trying to figure out what the problem was for about 10 minutes, we decided to give the camera a rest and ate some Chipolte. hehe.
after about 20 minute I got it to work again, but now the automatic focus doesnt' work on any of my lenses and i have to hold the shutter button down for about a second until it fires. It still doesn't fire everytime.
If anyone has any insite on this and could help me, I would appreciate it greately.

i was using it w/ a sync chord and strobe if that makes a difference, but the camera still wouldn't shoot when disconnected from the strobe.
the shutter is working fine currently, but i would just like some insight as to what you guys think may be the problem so if it happens again, i can fix it.
Maybe take it in to a local canon store? they seem to have all the right answers sometimes. It might be easier to actually just hold the camera and figure it out, there is only so much you can do on a forum.

Well i doubt any damage from external equipment.
However it is an electronic device and things do go wrong. You haven't said anything so im assuming no errors. Which is odd to me. Body shop breaks at least 2 cameras a month and they always have an error.
Try cleaning the lens contacts on the camera. When it stops open the battery cover and close it again and retry. This is different to just turning it off and back on at the switch. Good luck.
I had a similar problem with my 20d a while back. The problem turned out to be the shutter release button rather than the shutter. The release on the battery grip worked fine, while the button on the camera only worked intermittantly.
