I am thinking about buying a Canon L 500mm, the price is HIGH.
No one near where I live rents them. I am wondering if I bought it what would be the liklihood I could rent it in the future??
Does anyone have any thoughts? How often have you rented a lens?

That you could rent it out to others? Probably would depend highly on the area you are in, ability to reach other photographers in said area, etc. Probably wouldn't pay for itself in short order though given the nature of the lens and having to have insurance for it.

I certainly would but then again I have several very good stores with rental equipment within a few miles of me. I'd be less inclined to rent from an individual. If I were to rent one out I would probably do it as a package with a tripod to lessen the risk of damage from people trying to use it with a Kmart special $10 tripod.
Most rental houses will ship their lenses to you. You do have to pay for the shipping, but just because you can't go in and pick it up in person doesn't mean you can't rent it.
I've purchased my two most used lenses (24-70 2.8L and 70-200 2.8L). But the other, more "specialty" lens, I rent with no plans to buy (14mm 2.8L rectilinear, 15mm 2.8 fisheye, 300mm 2.8L telephoto). I simply don't use them often enough to want to purchase them.
So, yeah... rentals make a lot of sense to me even though I am also willing to purchase the things I use most.

Adorama rents and ships lenses, as does Penn Camera (where I'm renting the 70-200 this weekend for a wedding) and probably others. I didn't check to see if they had the 500L.

Unfortunately, I didn't see the 500mm lens for rent, they have the 400mm and the 600mm though. It'd be worth calling them since their list may be out of date. They'll rent out-of-state state and internationally.

How about the Canon EF 300mm f/2.8L IS USM coupled with a 2x? Roughly $ 2.000 less than the 500mm, probably the sharpest and fastest long lens in the stable, auto-focuses with converters.
Leo's in Vancouver used to rent it.
