I like putting borders on my photos. Lately, I have added borders to my photos for printing to make them meet the DPCPrints required aspect ratio. I would much rather add borders than crop out some of my composition. Seemed like a good idea at the time but when I went to have some of my prints framed, I had to get custom cut mats to fit around the composition. You can get standard mat sizes is nearly all of the DPCPrint sizes.
My favorite border is to make the background color a complimentary color to the composition, black, yellow, etc. Then I increase the canvas size a small amount to give just a hairline border around the photo. Next I duplicate the layer. Now I make the background layer white and increase the canvas size a substantial amount, say 1 inch. After that is done, I like to add a soft drop shadow all around the picture. I have done this on a lot of the photos I print for my note cards, it adds a nice self framing effect. Sometimes I will use a color other than white for the second canvas increase. Here are some examples of my borders.
