Well, I'm a happy camper. I finally got a Critique Club review for one of my shots. Cool! Thanks to dr rick for evaluating my shot.



In his comment, dr rick said that he noticed compression artifacts along some edges in the photo and these could have been caused by running NeatImage on a jpeg file and saving the result as a new jpeg file.

Can anyone offer advice on this technique? What format should images be submitted to and saved from NeatImage to avoid compression artifacts? As you can imagine, I don't want anymore compression artifacts in fiture submissions.

I do my editing in a layered Photoshop file, save the flattened result to an uncompressed TIFF, apply any sharpening (or NeatImage or other filtering) and/or borders, and save a copy of THAT as my final JPEG. I usually discard the changes to the TIFF, so if there's a problem (e.g. oversharpening halos) I can start over again from there.

My best advice would be to never use the sharpening controls in neatimage - or if you do, then very carefully. You have a lot more immediate control in PS or PSP.

Also, it's very likely that if Neatimage is doing this to your shot then you aren't using it properly, or haven't set it up properly for your camera: it takes a bit of preparation and work to get NI doing its stuff.

Just one question, are you useing the "demo" version of NeatImage? If so, this would explain the compression artifacts, since the demo will only save at a very low quality level.
