So, all you slick PS users out there....I'm going to try to describe to you what I want to do :)
I have a picture, and I want to have half of it in color, and half in black&white. I want it to blend between the two. I also want to have my black&white part be monochrome-channel mixed, for its great contrast and quality. I have my original color picture as the base layer, then another layer being the b&w version. Now how do I go about getting the results I'm seeking? I've messed around with the Gradient Tool, but can't seem to get that to work.
Create a layer mask on your top layer then, on the layer mask, make a gradient starting from slightly off center ending equally off center on the other side. For example, if you want the blend to happen through the middle third, draw the gradient from 1/3 to 2/3 across the image. This should make 1/3 of the mask black, 1/3 white, and 1/3 gradient. If this is confusing, which it certainly seems to be, just say so.
How do I use the gradient as a mask?

Create the layer mask by clicking the "Add layer mask" button on the bottom of the layers palette. Make sure the mask is highlighted (it is right after you create it) by clicking the mask thumbnail that's created beside the layer thumbnail in the layer palette. Now use the gradient tool normally.
hehe, I must be blind...I'm using CS2, and at the bottom of the layers palette I have Add a layer style, Add vector mask, Create new fill or adjustment layer, Create new group, Create new layer, and Delete....
