My camera has a 52mm mount. Sony makes a wide angle conversion lens for it. Also a telephoto lens. I'm wondering if I can use any wide angle or telephoto lens that is 52mm? Also, on my camera there is a "mode" to turn on when a conversion lens is on - I know it disables the zoom, and limits the aprature, etc. Is that really necessary? does anyone else's camera have to do that, too? Help me out - my wife is thinking of getting me one for Christmas.

You can. I use a 52mm Raynox teleconversion lens on my 58mm F717 using a step-down ring. You will get some vignetting at the widest angle, even with a 52mm : 52 mm. Also, you may want to use an aperture smaller than F 5.0 (i.e. 5.6/6.3 etc). Larger apertures may cause colour aberration and soft focus.

The F717 manual reads re. Conversion Lens: Set to [OFF] when using the VCL-HGD0758 or VCL-HGD1758, or to [ON] when using the VCL-MHG07. When a conversion lens is mounted, the weight prevents the lens from locking. We recommend supporting the lens with your left hand or using a tripod.

I use mine with the Conversion Lens setting in the [OFF] position.
