This last Tuesday morning at 2:30 AM, the famous Stardust hotel in Las Vegas was demolished. There was an awesome fireworks show leading up to the implosion, including the countdown in fireworks on the side of the building. :) I decided to drive out there to witness it all and ended up taking photos from the 10th floor of the Frontier. The shots aren't that sharp, but that's about the best the auto-focus on the 50mm f/1.8 could give me.

Wow - the shots are excellent. Sucks that they did it at night though.

Chances are good that you were far enough away that manual focus at infinity without using autofocus probably would have solved the focus issue.

Another trick with night 'action', like fireworks, is stopping down the lens and shooting at a longer shutter speed. That not only improves DOF but captures more fireworks/frame.

Those are pretty cool shots you got - a nice piece of history. Or undoing history in this case! I got to see the implosion of the Stardust from a distance - I was just getting off work and putting fuel in the ambulance and I heard all this noise. At first I thought it was somebody dragging something across the street - then I thought it must be thunder (but it was totally clear) and was going on for far too long - then, I got worried. I was almost afraid to look fearing nuclear war or something until my partner yelled at me to come look at all the fireworks. What a site! Glad you got something here to remember it by!

Only in Vegas to they demolish a building at 2:30 in the morning!

I think they do it that way because if they did it during the daylight hours, it would create a traffic nightmare and becuase of air quality regulations about dust in the valley.
