:) I think that might have worked if I and the previous owner(s) had set files to count continuously, but mine start again from DSC0001 every time I empty the card.
I know with Canons, there is no way a user can get the total count, but there is a counter in the system as I have heard people comment about it after having the camera in for a service they where told how many shots where on the camera. I think I heard it from someone who had a shutter mechanism replaced that the service centre entered the shutter count on the invoice.

I'm a mac user and found (don't remember where now, sorry) a small programme called Exif Viewer that includes this information in the EXIF data of an image. I used to reset the numbering every time I formatted a card (I stopped doing that now), so had lost count. Last image I took was number 4,990.
I'm sure there's a similar non-mac piece of software.
I am relatively sure that the click count is an in camera software, otherwise it would not carry from card to card when you change cards in the camera. On most cameras there is provision to reset it in the menus on the camera, or by doing a full reset, which returns everything to factory default settings. If you are erasing the cards with the camera plugged into a computer using the "erase camera contents" button on the computer, it may be resetting the count also. Try "un selecting" the "erase" check box and see if the count changes.
With prefrences in Mac iPhoto, you can also select to keep track of images by "film roll", which may be what is happening with the D100.
I am having a problem with having too many cameras. iPhoto is using the click numbers for file numbers, which overlap sometimes, being from the different cameras. This causes trouble when copying from iPhoto to disc or external hard disc. I have to go thru and deselect the images with the same "click number". I haven't figured out how to do that without it being a lot of effort. Does anyone know an easy fix for this, other than re numbering the whole iPhoto library by date and time of each image?
