Are we alowed to use filters if they fit on our cameras??
I have a sony F717 and many 58mm filters like fog and diffuser etc..
Can I use these on challenges? I notice someone did in one of the challenges.

Why not? If you can´t use them, we´ll not be allowed to use some DSLR cameras with diferent kinds of lens. Filters are hardware equipment. And every hardware that can be used to capture a more perfect moment need´s to be used.
Some people use lights, reflectors, filters, lens and all camera´s resource to create a very powerfull impression.
Can you do not allow a painter to use your brushs? The illegal "filters" are software filters, done with spoted or computer aided techniques to create an out capture scene effects.

The danger with using filters might be, and quite wrongly, that voters will assume you have used an illegal filter in PS and mark you down for it (rather than score as if not and do a DQ request.

If I had some... I´ll use them! You can use your lens? I can use my filters! You had gave a reasonable consil. But a great photo needs a great light... and great filters make some of this light.
Having thought a little more on the potential of people assuming (wrongly) people have faked something, you can always submit the original for the admins to look at as soon as the challenge starts, and hopefully have an admin note that will clear you.
Would be handy though if you could submit the request before the challenge starts, rather than only after when some people may have already seen it.
The use of filters seems to be a real art, one I have not mastered, but it certainly comes down to the photography end of the equation with a h/w filter and has got to be 100% legal for the same reason you can change a lens (as people here have stated).
Yep, all kinds of on-camera filters are indeed allowed. It's the Photoshop type that are scrutinized depending on what is used and how.
Just a reminder, too, based on what I've read here... people are supposed to always vote as though an image is indeed following the rules. If you suspect that there has been illegal editing, please use the DQ button, rather than vote it down because you suspect it's illegal. The site council will be glad to investigate suspicious shots.
I might also add, in the way of advice, that "just because you can, doesn't mean you should" when it comes to filters. There are people who buy a new filter and decide that they just have to use it on a shot. Oftentimes people have a nice photo situation to start with, and then wind up going nuts with effects and the shot suffers as a result!
