What a dumb ass, so because it looks like it could be a brochure he marked me low. That is what I was shooting for! a quality photograph. No I didn't copy a photo, or steal a photo! Why is it people with no cameras doing this? His vote lowers my score because hes an idiot.

next time send the person a private message and state your point. everyone on this site views each photo differently. in the big scope of things, his mark is very minor. no biggie. also, don't put the title of your photo in the forums, i was able to see it and that is considered unfair.
well if nothing else I learned some etiquette. It just annoyed me, sounded like he was either calling the photo a copy or just plain stolen. Arg. thanks for the c a l m replys.

If someone doesn't like it great, say why and what you would do to improve it. Which is what it's all about.

I got a comment yesterday from someone saying that they thought that my entry was creative but that it wasn't to their tastes.
That's fine by me. Sometimes, it's nice just to recognised, for someone to say that they appreciate some value in the entry without necessarily enjoying it.
The comment may not help me make a shot that that person would enjoy, but then, do I always want to?
Well, I read this thread and I was a bit disappointed that individual had taken time to leave so many comments and I didn't get one.
Now I see, I did get one from him, and it was right on target and helpful. I'm not so sure this is a troll after all.

I thought you can only vote if you participated in the challenge. I'm not a member and so I can understand why I can only view/make comment in member's challenges. But it looks like as long as you register you can vote even if you didn't enter the challenge.

If you look at the results of any of the open challenges that you enter you can see there are three scores. The average from people with cameras and the average from people without cameras, and the third being the overall average. In most cases the votes from people without cameras are ones that didnt enter a photo and likely are friends/family of people with cameras, interested in photography, and/or joined while deciding on a camera choice. Sometimes you'll find no camera votes in member challenges, but normally people who pay to join are usually ones that do have cameras. Similiarly you can still vote for challenges that you did not enter.
i took mine as rude at first.. but it's not all that bad - and padding comments to spare my feelings isn't really a requirement for constructive criticism anyways (although i suppose it's the ideal situation), so i guess i can take the advice and possibly apply it to future photos. overall still glad that the comment was left. i like receiving comments/feedback, negative or positive.. but only the negative if it explains why ;P

I dont even know what he is trying to say (except that my photo theme is pathetic!) but I guess the score wasn't too bad, because it doesn't look very different.
This cat left me a strange comment as well, simple stating. "why."
I sent him a private message asking for further explanation.
Who really cares? Some folks are going top like your shots & others won't. If nothing else, the variety of dpc is what makes it so good... & sometimes not so good when you get strange or mean comments.
Besides, just bc he thinks it, doesn't make it so, right?
We can be upset & take it one way but he still has the right to say as he feels, whether we like it or not.
I bet for everyone that did not like your shot, there will be someone who does. But most importantly, if the shot cam out the way you invisioned it & you like it, well that's all that counts anyway.

i'm not a student of photography. i'm not a professional. i'm a person who loves beauty and design. i realize now, after reading this post, that i left people some harsh comments. whoever said that i spent a good deal of effort leaving comments was right...i went through the whole "still life" contest and voted, peppering comments here and there; it took a good hour and a half.
i'm not going to list any of my attributes, my past photography experience, my resume...i just would like to say that i have benefited from the type of criticism i gave, and others have likewise benefited from my criticism (as illustrated here, tonight). please don't take any of this as a personal affront. i've never met any of you, but i'm sure you're all lovely people who i would probably get along with. i get caught up in the moment, in terms of what i think is worthy of recognition; i'm opinionated and i dislike bad design. but that's all relative, correct?
i hope you all realize that this site depends on criticism. i know now to try to be more considerate, but i'm not promising anything. if i think something is pathetic, fine. maybe i shouldn't post it because it's not constructive, or maybe i should exercise my freedom of opinion, but that's another issue. the photos that I enjoyed the most got the most constructive responses. however to be clear, i dislike photos that look like brochure pictures or that look too contrived to be truly free photography or that have a bunch of toys, bongs, coins, or whatever other inventory you decided to photograph arranged like a catalog ad (hence the eBay comments). no doubt, many were beautiful...but if i want a centerpiece for my table, i'll buy a centerpiece for my table. if i want to see your collection of action figures, i'll ask for a link to your auction on eBay.
thank you, those of you who found my criticism helpful. while abstract and technical design terms must be used when critiquing photography, i hoped to give comments that were easy to understand, easy to put to use. for those of you whose pictures i called pathetic, if you'd like to know why, i'd be happy to tell you. i hope that once i begin posting to this site, you'll all do me the courtesy of cutting to the chase and calling my photography pathetic if it's what you think (but only if it's really what you think).

Earlier people were moaning about not getting comments on low scoring shots, and now someone is doing it you are complaining? This is what you get if you try and comment on low shots, that's why I don't bother. If you hate a photo so much that you give it a 1, there isn't much nice stuff that you can say about it in a comment.
Also I thought I'd say that this whole thread attacking dertyklobb, calling him an idiot and a troll and stuff, is much more insulting than a comment saying 'yuck' or whatever. What makes you any different from him in that sense? Does it not make you worse?
