I am wondering about the many seemingly full frame portraits that are posted. I offer the following as example.



My first question is Of the many full frame face shots posted, do you think the majority are uncropped (or cropped only for dimension), or do you think most of them are heavily cropped?

My follow up question is Given the lenses below, what is my best bet for getting an uncropped full-frame shot of best quality (and let's not quibble too much about the characteristics of best quality)? I am guessing that the Tamron fully extended and stopped down to around f10 would probably do the best job, but I would love to hear debate.

Tamron SP AF 28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di for Canon
Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 APO DG Macro for Canon
Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II

Any conversation on this topic?

I think that, stopped down t f/8, you're going to have to look very closely to see differences between them. The biggest difference may be in color rendition, and you'd naturally tweak that anyway, so should not be a decision factor.
In absolute sharpness, the 50/1.8 is probably going to be the winner, but you're going to have to look hard to see the difference.

I nominate the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro as an excellent portrait lens. The only trouble is, for portraits it may be a bit long for the 1.6x crop factor. However, since you're talking full frame face shots, this one will get right in there without being too close.. :-)

I wouldn't think twice about using the tamron. But I have a super sharp copy.

David - I absolutely LOVE that lens. Unfortunately I don't own it.
