so, i am a little lost
i am using a second flash as a a salve
I am getting a light stand, and an umbrella, and a umbrella adapter.
it says i also need to get a hot shoe adapter
but when i look at the hot shoe adapter description it says this

how come it has to be mounted on the camera? i thought this was for the lightstand
Many ways to set up a slave flash to fire depending on equipment.
I prefer cords myself.
A minimum set up would require your primary on-camera flash - and a external flash which would be adapted with a sensor to read & also fire the moment exposure is made. No cords should be necessary.
My equipment would use one of these adapters attached to the slave flash.
yes. you might check with your flash equipment paper-work manuals to determine how to make it function as a slave. The devices I have pictured may not work at all with your equipment. There are several other versions also.
Perhaps this will help. I have a Canon 430EX that I mount on a stand.
The stand - I use a three-section 8.4 ft that allows a max load of 15 lbs.
Attached to the stand is a Swivel Holder (I use one from Adorama - part number 781404). This has a place to insert an umbrella and has a (removable) adapter on top to which my flash attaches. The part rotates so that I can angle my flash.
My 430EX sits on the swivel adapter and my umbrella is inserted into the adapter as well.
Next, I have a 580EX on a camera bracket attached to my camera. The 580EX can remotely trigger the 430EX (they both fire). These two flashes work together wirelessly, but I am not sure what sort of flashes you have. If you have two flashes that don't work together this way, or you have only one flash, then you will need something attached to your camera that will fire your remote flash(es). There are several different systems out there and there are better people than me to help you review your options.
