I thought about this all week and could not think of one place or area that I would consider sacred to me anyway. I thought that I could just go shoot a church or something but it wouldn't be real to me, a church is just a place where you meet to learn about God and such. I thought about Nature (the original church meeting place) but being originally from Montana, there is nothing here in my area of Upstate New York that is even close to the isolation and quiet sense of being I get from being in the mountains of my home state. So that left my bathroom but it's in a total state of disrepair in the downstairs and the upstairs isn't much better. So then I thought of my bedroom but then again, the only thing I do in there is sleep. So this is one I'll be sitting out on. :(
Unless I can come up with a killer idea in the next 2.5 hours!
I hear you. I did submit, and I hope the voters consider that there are very diverse opinions on what is "sacred" and that this does not always imply religion... but realistically I think I'm gonna get lots o' "sacred??" comments!
I opted out from this one also, for similar reasons to you.
Personally I hope I don't get a killer idea in the next 2.5 hours ..... as I am at work, camera is at homke, and it would be just tooooooo frustrating to now have an idea and not be able to do it *laugh*
I submitted a 'Sacred Place' entry, although it's not 'sacred to me'. I'm agnostic/atheist (still havent decided which yet *grin* ), so I dont consider any place 'sacred' - although the place entered does have religious connections for my wife.
I didn't because I know it will be another religious one. Personally, I would like to see fewer of these. Even if people submit places like churces, mosques, temples, and synagogues for an architecural challenge, that's not the same as the challenge to photograph something sacred.
I didn't submit either. I wanted to submit and searched high and low for a suitable subject/location, but alas, there wasn't anything that had that "look" I was searching for. I was planning on selling out and shooting anything that had to do with religion (since I'm agnostic), but still couldn't find the perfect location/lighting/sky.

Great! One problem though, no way in hades I can get it ready in time, LOL!
And I swear I just cleaned it yesterday, it's the magnet of everything and the black hole of the house, if you want it lost, put it on my desk :)

I don't let minor details like that get in the way ... I find a working definition something like "unworthy of being desecrated (exploited) by humans for personal gain" covers just about all the cases, religious and not ....

I'm an atheist and I love to take pictures of religious things from many belief systems because I find religion fascinating. However, I also find GeneralE's definition very true and workable as well. I know this challenge will spark some remarkable images.
You know it's something sacred to you when you feel uncomfortable about photographing it, as if you're being disrespectful or desecrating it somehow. That's how I felt for the subject I found.
I am a bit surprised that there weren't any submissions of a cow. Hindu or not, I thought it would have made an interesting interpretation and actually considered it.
Being a native New Yorker, I'm surprised that you couldn't find a nice remote spot. What region do you live in upstate? Hudson Valley, Catskills, Ramapos, Adirondacks, Finger Lakes, Capitol District, Niagra Frontier? If I'd have read this sooner I would be able to direct you to some really awesome places. I've traveled all around the USA. There is beauty in all of the states, but one of the most diverse is NYS. There is ocean, sound, islands, rivers, canals, forests, mountains, vallies, meadows, wildflowers, 4 distinct seasons, wildlife in abundance, waterfalls, and on and on.
I'd really encourage you to order a free "I Love New York" book and do some exploring. It's not Montana, but it is uniquely New York.

P.S. If you ever get bored with all you can do in N.Y. you can always visit neighboring Canada, Vermont, PA, Connecticut, NJ, OH, or Mass. Could take a life time to see all the wonders of the North East. Go have some fun! :-)

I have to agree. I don't know exact figures, but overall I don't think I have ever scored a challenge so high overall.
I was just expecting church and statues, and there are some wondeful ones in there like that. However, there are also some fantastic shots that are less obvious "sacred" in the religeous sense, but still say sacred very nicely indeed. I don't think there was even one I'd consider right off topic.
My one question though is ..... what happened to the gratuitous cat shot, I didn't see it ;)
Oh I know there is a lot of beauty in the area but the remote sense of isolation is not here nor anywhere else I've been to in this state. In Montana you can easily go 200 miles between towns with little inbetween where here, when we first moved here it felt like I would be lucky to go 2 blocks without seeing another house!
The first year I was here I was miserable, my poor husband is from this area (Southern Tier) and did his best to help but I really missed my wide open spaces and the ability to be able to drive for 10 minutes and be alone, completely alone with just you and nature. But like I said, I'm adjusting more every year, LOL!
