I feel awful, my little boy is going to have his tonsils removed on tuesday and he´s only just 4 years old. I remember when mine were taken, I was 18 and I felt terrible for an entire week and still I at least understood perfectly what was going on.
The anesthesia or whatever you call it when you are put to sleep really went badly in me, I was totally out of it for about 24 hours afterwards and I am worried the same will be for Alexander.
Really going to shower him with allt he frozen popsicles he want´s and just pretty much anything he asks for.
I don´t think I have ever been so nervous for anything in my life :(
Bah, don´t know why I am writing this down, perhaps so someone with a similar experience can just pat me on my back.
I had to take my daughter just before her 6th birthday. I was scared to death but once there I realized she was in really capable hands. We were back home just a few hours later and she was just fine. I had a hard time getting her to eat anything at first but the threat of having to go back to the hospital got her eating quickly. Alexander will like the happy juice prior to surgery :)

now i ask for a pat on the back, too...i also have to have my tonsils out and sinus surgery at the same time. i go for a CT scan tomorrow, then back to the doc to schedule the surgery. not looking forward to it at all. :-/

My daughter had her tonsils and grommits done when she was four. The worst part is walking away from the room after they been anathetised leaving them there with a room full of strangers totally vulnerable was incrredibly difficult. I laso had a battle to be in the recovery with my daughter when she woke. I'm glad I insisated cause she a reacted badly when she woke up and was very unpset and very unusaually so for my daughter aggressive!
Overall it was'nt the best of experiences for her BUT when I think about how sick she used to get with her tonsils and how often and how that could affect her ongoing development I am glad I had it done.
They dont reccommend having tonsils out lightly these days so your son must really need them out. It might be hard in the short term but in the long run it will be well worth.
My friends son who is 6 just had his out last week. They were home by lunch time and he has been pretty good overall so you just never know!
Good luck also if he is 4 he will have a pretty good understanding if you talk to him about yet and the younger they are the easier it is and the better they recover :)

Better young than old. I had mine out when I was 16 and that was a NIGHTMARE. You don't heal as well and you have major long term pain. He will be good to go in a day or so. That particular surgery is best done when they are little like this. (hugs) dad! Get him some new cool toy he has been wanting and present it to him after the surgery. It'll be ok.
One of my sons went under when he was 18 months old...I was petrified. I had a 2 1/2 year old daughter at the time and I was pregnant with my third. Hubby worked away from home up to 2 weeks at a time. I never handle anaesthetic well...and have to be watched carefully so I didn't know how my son would handle it. Well...he got through it...although the nurses couldn't hold him as he was waking up...he was too violent...they called me in but there wasn't much I could do...he was too out of it. But eventually he fell asleep and when he woke he was fine.
He has since gone under several more times and has many more to go....but at least we now can handle it a little better.
My point Larus, is this. Every child is different...they may or may not inherit your reaction to the drugs used. Go in with an open mind and do the best you can for your child. Nobody can ask any more than that.
Good luck, Larús. I'll be thinking about all of you. The best thing is that he won't have the problems he's having now, so in the long run he'll feel so much better. Hang in there.
same as Cindi, I had mine out at 4 yrs old and don't remember a thing.
Just the same, spoil your little man rotten with ice cream, popsicles, and whatever else he desires.
Thanx guys, the surgery was this morning and Henny was with him while I went to school and took care of Monika. We went to see him in the afternoon and he felt awful but was a real trooper and I couldn´t be more prouder of him.
Went to the toy store on the way home and bought some Playmobile toys for him, his favorite and It´ll be waiting for him on his bed when he get´s home tomorrow, he and Henny are staying overnight at the hospital just in case...
My daughter had hers taken out last year (she was 4) and she was fine. We got to leave about 2 hours after the surgery... and she did get sick in the car on the way home, but that was from motion and from being put under.
She talked the whole time and didn't complain of much pain. The pain meds are really nasty tasting, so we masked them with some applesauce.
Just have lots of popsicles, applesauce, and other soft foods. After day 2, she was begging for "real" food. :)
spoil him rotten. i've never had my tonsils out but i just got done with a stomach flu and when i was back to "normal" (ha ha) i just wanted to eat EVERYTHING. i'm all for spoiling when you don't feel good.
Larus - glad to hear he came through OK. The young bounce back so much more easily than us old farts ... well, I'm an old fart, anyway ;-) One of my daughters had complicated kidney surgery at age 11, and was playing soccer 2 weeks later! Her favorite activity in the hospital the first time (age 3; no surgery then) was taking a ride down the hall on her IV pole and leaping onto a waterbed in the playroom. Scared me to bits as I had visions of the IV getting ripped out, but I shut up and let her enjoy herself. She's in med school now so I don't think she was too traumatized by all the medical experiences :-)
