Now why is this worth a whole point higher? It doesn't look real. The portraits which are a large portion of the character of the dome have had all the detail photoshopped out of them. And what's with the pinkish middle section where the windows are...
Frankly your "Balance" shot is surprising at 6.5. It isn't nearly as good as your other one or the one done by taterbug. The processing is much more on the harsh side.
As far as Inner Sanctum and Up, well, they are much closer. The point perhaps comes from the challenge topic and the competition each faced in their respective challenge.
I think what it is, is that for anyone never being there to appreciate it and see the details and nuances, our visual palette likes the color balance and how they compliment each other in the bottom one. The "real" shots you show, to a photographer, would get a first impression of having the wrong white balance so often associated with the yellow tones.
I wasn't here during the orange challenge, but I gave Balance a 5 and Up a 10. I think Inner Sanctum and Up are both a lot better than Balance. As to the color or missing portraits, for those of us who don't know what it really looks like we are just judging what we see.
The composition on the blue one is that much better. It's really close to the first one you posted, but different enough that it really draws the eye in that much more. And the colors are more pleasing to my eyes, personally.

From a color theory stand point, the blue/orange has a whole lot more going for it in terms of complimentary colour relationships. As the orange comes towards and the blue receeds visually, it gives an unusual effect, where the orange is actually further away but visually seems closer.
This creates more visual vibrancy and movement in the image than the 'real' versions.
Add to that that the lighting is more interesting [not as even] in the blue/orange version, with a whole lot more depth happening and it adds up to a much more visually engaging image. The darker lower regions and lighter upper dome draw the eye upwards and the colour relationships force the issue even more.
The second shot of mine that you have posted was DQ'd because I had the date set wrong so I went to the same location to try a different take on a similar view.
TooCool's was the same exact angle and crop. ;-)
Again, not a criticism and I can see why you would want to shoot it again if it scored well the first time.
Easy, it is the differences in respective challenge voting patterns, nothing more.
Actually, it is astounding that both images would place very similarly in two completely different challenges. That indicates DPC voters must be doing something right.
The first image finished 2nd out of 211 entries. The second finished 4th out of 383 entries. The first image finished .2 lower than the first place image and the second one finished .3 points lower than the first place image. That is quite remarkable if you ask me.
The overall average for the second image was much lower because voters simply got sick of looking at doctored images in the orange challenge and didn't give any images very high overall scores.
well, good news. I gave you an 8 and I only gave taterbug a 5. Not because your picture is better, but because I was new to DPC at the time and I didn't realize that dome photos were A DIME A DOZEN. Still, you got a higher score from me. Whoop dee do.
