Thanks John, I'll give it a try. Is this supposed to be 18% gray? And won't it depend on the printer?

It's close enough to the color and my camera could not tell the difference between this and a real gray card under several different lighting conditions.

You can usually find an 8x10 grey card at any camera store on matte board for about $2.50
