Hi folks, I finally have my website relocated but before i sent it out I wanted to update some of the text. So I downloaded Cute FTP which seems pretty straight forward. The problem is, I think I might be missing something and can't find the answer via Google. When I go in the htdocs folder and click on the 'contact' section which is what I want to edit..then I click on "edit" from the top menu, a little part of the actual website pops up, I delete the text I don't want, put in the text I do want, save, and it always goes right back to what it was before --- like I'm not actually DOING anything!
Are you editing the local file or the remote file? Usually the local files are on the left and the remote on the right.
If you are editing the remote file, you should see and entry in the transfer log that shows a copy was downloaded and when you SAVE the file, you should see another entry that shows it being re-uploaded. Also refresh the browser window. Hope that helps.
If your files are on the website and you have access to that, you have them. Like Art and Rain said, the files on the right hand side are the ones that are being hosted on your site. The stuff on the left is your computer. You'll need to download the file from your host onto your computer, edit it, save it and reupload it.

Correct. You can edit the remote files directly but what that actually does is download a copy and open it in the editor, then reuploads when you save. It's best to have a complete local copy of the site files and work with those, then upload them (drag & drop) after editing.
So as MK said - create a folder for the site files on your local drive, then navigate to it on the left and drag the contents of the httpdocs folder into it.
Okay so I've downloaded the contacts file from the right pane onto my computer. When I'm done editing, it saves to rich text format so that when I transfer it back to the right pane again the icon looks different from the others.

RTF? What are you editing it in? You can use CuteFTP's built in editor - otherwise should be saved in HTML format, not Rich Text.
I'm using the built-in Cuteftp editor and for some reason whenever I go to save the file it tells me that it has to save it as RTF. *shrugs* not sure why!
One thing to note (and this likely isn't the case but I thought its still worth mentioning). Sometimes the proxy server will have a cached copy of the original and hasn't been told to get the new version. If you press ctrl-f5 (on Firefox and Internet Explorer) that will at least update your computers local cache and may force the proxy to download the new one.
I did it ... *phew* I had to do a bunch of internet searches just to stumble on a checkbox I didn't realize needed to be un-checked. And now it's all working like gangbusters.
