I just received this e-mail. I apologize if it's something y'all have all seen before, but it just amazed me, so I had to share it. :-) From here on out, it is a direct quote of the e-mail I received.
Don't look down while you're viewing these shots...
This is a case of "photographer photographs photographer." The following photographs were taken by photographer Hans van de Vorst at the Grand Canyon, Arizona. The descriptions are his own. The identity of the photographer IN the photos is unknown.
I was simply stunned seeing this guy standing on this solitary rock IN the Grand Canyon.
The canyon's depth is 900 meters here. The rock on the right is next to the canyon and safe.
Watching this guy on his thong sandals, with a camera and a tripod I asked myself 3 questions:
1. How did he climb that rock?
2. Why not taking that sunset picture on that rock to the right, which is perfectly safe?
3. How will he get back?
This is the point of no return.
After the sun set behind the canyon's horizon he packed his things (having only one hand available)
and prepared himself for the jump. This took about 2 minutes. At that point he had the full attention of the crowd.
After that, he jumped on his thong sandals... The canyon's depth is 900 meters here.
Now you can see that the adjacent rock is higher so he tried to land lower, which is quite steep
and tried to use his one hand to grab the rock.
We've come to the end of this little story. Look carefully at the photographer. He has a camera, a tripod and also a plastic bag,
all on his shoulder or in his left hand. Only his right hand is available to grab the rock and the weight of his stuff is a problem.
He lands low on this flip flops both his right hand and right foot slips away... At that moment I take this shot.
He pushes his body against the rock. He waits for a few seconds, throws his stuff on the rock, climbs and walks away.
Read the link MK gave. I got that in an email 2 weeks ago......looked it up and there's a ledge below him. Not so crazy after all (but still not very smart).

The S5000 Z is a bit more then a point and shoot... and it still sucks.
Trust me, I was supposed to be getting a D50 and an 18-200 VR to go with it by febuary. 1 Vehicle 3 Accidents 3 Citations Later... camera will have to wait till next year. Good news is itll be a D200 by then.

SOme people worry more about the cost fo their equipment thentheir life.
Total price of al my camers when they were new i could have had a 30D two lenses and a monopod by now lol.
Whoa, Jeff! I was just kidding. But you're right - it has a ring of truth to it. I don't have a very impressive list, but when I am carrying it and I stumble or trip, my first reaction is to cover my gear (as opposed to reaching out to break my fall).
That said, that guy in the photos is insane either way you look at it. Ledge or not.
With Egoobie looking over my shoulder at the first series of photos posted we both think the guy is absolutely crazy! After looking at the link, we still think he is crazy even though there is a ledge further down.
It is truly not worth losing one's life over or to a lesser extent breaking an arm, leg, camera gear or all of the above.

Heh I had a perfect record for 4 years. Believe it or not driving sports cars lol. I buy a truck and all of a sudden im speeding and having accidents lol.
Heh i broke my fathers cam corder when i fell and had it strapped to my hand. I said sorry dude it was my face or your camera. Your camera lost that battle.
