We are in the process of planning a trip to the outer banks for next August due to a family commitment.
Anyone been there and have photo location ideas? I think we are going to be there most of a week. I hear there's some biking there, so I guess that's my alternative plan for things to do. (I am not a beach-goer for recreation.)
Any information and ideas that you can provide about photography and biking down there are much appreciated.
Haven't been there in eons but I remember Ocracoke Island as being pretty. Quaint town, harbor, artist shops, and wild ponies. Plus photo ops on the ferry ride over and back.
Also saw dolphins in the surf, numerous lighthouses and a few old shipwrecks along the Outer Banks' beaches ... and a wildlife refuge ... somewhere near Kitty Hawk, I think.

even though it's been getting more and more developed, it's still more of a get-away, beachy type of place than a seaside city. there's no boardwalk, no super-highrise condos, no sidewalks. just miles and miles of beaches, with the stretches of strip malls filled with seafood restaurants, tacky tourist shops, barbecue joints, and the like.
Seems like we will be planning to be there the wrong "season" (for my interests anyway--I looked at some nature places and they said fall was better--but we don't have a choice). We are now thinking of going down for only 4 nights, and doing something else for 2-3 nights as well on the way back north. We are considering going to the Great Smoky Mountains as well.
I'm up for any ideas (and pics are always a good way to see places, so post em if you got em.)

there's really no bad time of year there, but don't make the same mistake people make when heading down under for two weeks and only alot 3 days in NZ because it looks so much smaller than that other big place ;-) there's a lot to see and do, and it's definitely not a place to try to blast through. it's more of a take-your-time-relax-and-enjoy-it type of place. i don't know where you're heading, but the mountains are almost 10 hours from the outer banks...nc is deceptively wide.
