I'm working in CS2 with two processed versions of the same raw image - I have dragged one onto another and would like to add a layer mask - but when I do it appears that the images are not perfectly aligned - there is no visible gap between the image when i view them - is there a foolproof way of ensuring that the two images are perfectly aligned ?

If the images are exactly the same size and crop, just copy and paste one onto the other (rather than drag). Otherwise, set the top layer to 50% opacity and zoom in.

or, drag the layer from the layers palette into the new document (again, assuming the two documents are the same size and crop)

Yet a third way: if you have both open and are using the move tool to drag from one window to the other, hold down the shift key while doing so and they will automatically align. That does assume they're the same size, which of course would be true if they are different versions of the same image.
