I heard many posts complain about the 1,2 vote trolls out there. Those don't really bother me, it just part of the fun. However, I wish we could do something about that darn 5 headed troll who always votes 5. You know who I mean and several you are probably guilty. You hit that 5 button over and over again till something peaks. The problem with this is not all fives are created equal.
I have recently started voting differently. Now instead of voting with 5 as the standard I vote with either a 4 or 6. I look at the photo and ask myself is this photo "slightly" above average or "below". I think it makes for a little more constructive voting. I still do give out the occassional 5, but those images in my mind are the utmost of average. Just as some of you hold on to your dear 10s, maybe you should rethink the same for the "average" 5. My fives are just as rare as my tens these days.
So I say, bring down the five headed troll. Don't let him take over dpchallenge.

My intention was really never to say you can't vote 5. My point was more that I believe that "5" has ended being nothing more than the "Next" key. Maybe it is voter fatigue, but I am guilty of just hitting 5 over and over. I was just proposing what I am doing to change this. By not starting with a set notion of "5" I am actually engaging myself by looking at the photo more. Really, this wasn't meant more than to be a discussion of how to improve voting. Not neccessariling that 5 should be abolished. I know, I don't get my point across very well. It is definetly not meant to be a topic saying that people should or not not be average. I would expect things to follow a normal distribution curve and there is nothing wrong with being average.
I think they should have this visual voting system here at DPC, sort of like those bead-organizers for kids, where you have to place all images on a continuum and then you have to shape the continuum to whatever bell shape you want.

If you guys (Site Council) monitor 1 votes, do you monitor 10 votes?
This would be the good way to go: all votes of 10 are multiplied by the closest vowel to your username, in reverse order, where those users closest to "u" get their 10s multiplied by 5, "o" by 4, and so on. On top of that, all users with vowel names get 4 extra 10s. This is then included in the total score and used for the average.
I don't mind getting all 5's, but then leave a comment...
Comments don't help much if I end up scoring an 8.0 average, because there's not much you can tell me that would improve it, and if i was averaging a 3.0, then without anyone telling me anything I know that it stunk pretty awfully...
But in the mediocre 5.0 range: that's where I really need to know what to improve. It's halfway decent, but lacking... Ok. What is it lacking?

I agree. I've been trying to use the full scale lately, and also trying to comment on the full scale (on at least some images in all numbers). But there's going to be a bunching up to the middle no matter what.
The problem with commenting is that it is a lot safer to simply mention something you do like about the image, because, unless you're all glowy about your comments, quite a few people get offended, and claim that you don't get it, or whatever.
There's that old, "If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all." Now, I guess it could be debated, what's "nice"? Is it "nice" to just pat your friends on the back? Sometimes it is. Is it "nice" to mention things you think might help the photographer, even if those things are not pats on the back? Yes, it is, but many people don't take it that way. Oh well.

I can see the way this is going. First there were the threads condemning 1 voters, then the 2 & 3 voters. Now it is the 5 voter with reference to the 10 voter as well. Perhaps we should all vote 7 on everything entered, then everybody who enters a challenge will win the Blue Ribbon and as a bonus, get the Brown Ribbon as well.
I'm sorry. I didn't realise that we were not allowed to vote 5s on photos. I shall go back and change them all to 1s.

I never meant to say you or anyone else can't vote 5. Another way to look at it, at the end of the challenge 70% of your votes are 5 (not specifically naming you). So you are telling those images are still equal in your eyes? I am just suggesting people might want to rethink their voting patterns for a second.
