Drew or Langdon: vignetting-is this allowed? it was an option available using a program someone here suggested called photo cleaner. the image I have submitted currently has this enabled). it's effect seems to darken the picture a bit, but other than that i don't know. i just want to find out if i should submit my picture without this, so that i won't get dq'ed. i'm not sure if this counts as levels or not

Judging from the name, it sounds like it darkens the outside edges of the image, like using a very wide angle lens, so you get dark corners and maybe a kind of border around the whole image. Since it doesn't affect the center of the image, I wouldn't call it a global effect.
Vignetting is when the photo fades out from bright in the center to dark in the outside.
It can happen from using large telephoto lenses. If you have a zoom camera, put a telephoto lens on and zoom out. You'll probably get completely black edges that fade into an image inside a circle. What you have captured is the inside of the telephoto lens.

From that link, I say definitely no -- vignetting is not allowed. The mere fact that you have to make a selection to use it should be a technical reason within our current rules for its exclusion as an acceptable modification.
thanks, i submitted the original. the effect didn't make an oval like the one on the link, it looked to me like it increased the contrast over the image, predominantly around the border of the image.
