Must survey every horizontal surface. And I do mean every. So shelves, tables, under shelves, under tables, top of bookshelves, piles o' stuff, freezer, fridge, pantry, particularly flat shoes....

Back on topic, that's a real bummer man. Were you serious about the ghostie part? Because if so, I've heard several times that asking the ghostie out loud to please return the missing item can work. Or if that was just a figure of speech, I'm offering nutter advice now ;-)
Sometimes amid all the frantic searching, it helps to walk away from it for a while and come back later with a fresh mind. I find a lot of my stuff that way. But I know that if it were my camera missing, I probably wouldn't be able to do that either...
