ok i tried a 100 watt daylight light bulb since i dont have any of your fancy strobes or whatever it is you guys use. No flash either. its still blurry. can i get some tips please :)
I haven't ever tried shooting smoke before but I'm assuming it is blurry cause you can't get a good focus on something like that. I would suggest (if you haven't already), turn on the lights and hold something up at about the position the smoke will be so and set your focus. Make sure the camera is on manual focus so it doesn't try to re-focus when shooting. Now set up the smoke and give it a try.
btw...despite the blurry part, it is a cool effect with the black background and blue lighting.
Are you using autofocus? If so, turn it off and focus on a held object right in the plane where the smoke will rise. Also, what kirbic said, try for the fastest shutter you can manage.
i took about 200 last night and about the same tonight. my shutter was at 1/80. anything higher made my pics too dark and i couldnt bump up the ISO cause the noise was sooo bad that even neat image wouldnt cure it. and i used the self timer. i had a lot of cool affects but they were all out of focus. the smoke was going in all directions. i had to take a break though, cause the incense were killin me!

If you're not using flash, you'll need to use a pretty fast shutter speed, like at least 1/125 second. Flash is ideal, though.
