Another technique:
- Apply USM to the whole image
- Undo
- Set the history brush to the USM step (now the one past the current step in the history panel)
- Set the history brush to between 30% and 50% opacity
- Brush areas you want sharpened, brush over twice for full effect
- Adjust opacity of the brush for finer controlled application
edit to add: You can obviously do this with any editing steps in the history panel - apply multiple effects or edits, undo back to a specific point and set the history brush to the last (grayed out) step in the history panel. Remember to set the history brush in the history panell immediately after the undo part otherwise you will overwrite the steps with the next edit/action.
