I just realized I did not put my copyright information on my first DPCPrints print... Is this important enough that I should delete it from the server, edit and re-upload?
I do what Ben does. Lately I have also been pointing out in the description the size of the actual image area so that the purchaser knows that an appropriate mat opening can be cut to cover the border, if desired. (See this print for an example.)
A mat will typically cover a portion of the print anyway so that it can be secured to the mat. i.e., a mat for an 8x10 print will not have an 8x10 opening, but typically something smaller, like 7.5" x 9.5".
As far as the aspect ratio goes, as long as your "canvas size" (to use a Photoshop analogy) is the right aspect ratio for your desired print size, and your photo fits on that "canvas" the way you want, you are all set.
I include copyright also. When I format for an 8x10 print, I make my image crop at 7.5x9.5 and then paste it onto an 8x10 canvas to create a 1/4" border. I put my copyright/title/name in the lower right hand corner on the border area.
