This thread is for suckers to commiserate and compete. It can also be used for anyone with questions or comments about the Suck lifestyle. If you do wish to join us, we ask that you participate at DPC for a while to see if sucking really is your style, and we ask that you fulfill whatever half-brained initiation we come up with at that moment.

woohoo! we be new and shiny. i note the 'winging, not winning'. also not whingeing - as there is very little of that here. which is one of the many tihngs that makes suckage so good.

Chris, how did your lunchtime street shooting turn out?
argh! i'm trying street shooting again and cant get a clean shot. everything is coming out blurry. i had my camera set to aperture priority with the ISO at 100 and F4.5. everything came out blurry though.
i'll try again tomorrow on lunch...
it'll be ealier in the day this time and there'll be better light.
chris - iso 400, f8. that's the best street shooting set-up. 400 is very forgiving for lighting, and f8 has a good chance of getting what you want in focus.
Christian - good advice on the internet thing. I'm always polite, though I do whine a bit if need be. I've been alternating phoning in my request to the "central" desk somewhere, and stopping by the shop where I ordered the service. Today will be another "stop by the shop" day, where all they can really do is call the "central" desk somewhere.
I figure I'll have one of my coworkers who speaks the language call the cable company on Wednesday (next day everyone is back at work here) and see if I can order service. Heck, I want German television anyway, though I need to go find a signal converter that converts PAL to NTSC for me.
In the mean time, I've been having fun at home looking through folders of old pictures. When not looking at them in the "will this score well on DPC?" light, I have some really neat stuff I need to go back and edit to keep. :-)
I'm not in Harsh, nor yet in Free Study, though I have one of those pictures for Free Study that I like because of the moment in time thing, but will mean nothing to anyone else and has no "wow" whatsoever. I'm still considering it anyway, of course.

sorry to pop in unannounced, but does this mean we know what happened to team suck and I won't have to see that thread on the home page any more and wonder everyday if something did happen to team suck? I never actually looked in the thread, but the question haunts me for some reason.
and fwiw, I don't think you guys suck all that much. :)
Um... yeah. I think that's what it means. We were, indeed, found, though I can't say we were ever lost. Perhaps perceived that way, but not actually "lost". For the most part.
And drop in whenever you wish - we generally don't abuse visitors. Much. :-)

ya know, i'm not sure when i last used usm. maybe that's why i don't score well... in advanced, i use a high pass layer set to soft light, then masked for the specific area i want sharpened. i find usm gives a quality i just don't like. it looks...weird.
Wow, I have no idea how to do the stuff you mentioned on here. I think I'd better order a Photoshop for Dummies book to go along with my new version. What's a high pass layer?
high pass is a filter. it's only legal in advanced. you need to duplicate your image layer first. then, under filters, select others. the little side menu thing will pop up, and select high pass. (i have no idea what it really does, or why, it's like a car or computer - i can use them, but dont know ow they work)
when the high pass box comes up, select a small number for strength 10 is pretty good. you'll see your image go all grey and sabatieed, with emphasis on the parts that are in focus. don't panic!
in the blending mode for the layer, select any from overlay to vivd light. you can see how they affect the harshness of the increased focus.
i usually use this with a layer mask, as it can look really weird over the whole image. it's great for bumping up the detail on eyes, or a small area of a whole.
Hmmm my Pattern score started at 5.5 then dropped like a stone with every update until it got down to 5.1 and the commenters didn't seem to think much of it, then today it's gone up with every update, up to 5.7 and the commenters like it...I'm so confused.
