I think I see neat image and aggressive sharpening. I donno though.
Have you ever tried "high pass" filtration for sharpening? IN photoshop, at the top of the standard filters list, last of the first group, "other/high pass". Copy the base layer, apply high pass to it, and fade it in and out in overlay mode. The high pass is very adjustable as to how aggressive you want it to be. Watch out for haloing.
