I just got back from a park (public I suppose) where a sherrif had a bunch of convicts to help out & also enjoy a concert. I took a couple of shots from clear across the park and the sherrif saw me. He left all of his convicts to make the long walk across the open space to have some words with me in front of lots of people.
I behaved, but I didn't delete the shots.
I thought public was fair game. Was the sherrif making things up? Also, this was a police benefit or some such thing, so nearly the entire police force (New Orleans) was there.

You shoulda mouthed off, fought like hell, refused to cooperate, screamed out obscenities and disparaging remarks about cops in general, told them you're a Canadian citizen and have Diplomatic immunity and then talk trash about their mama.
Trust me, Slippy, in the U.S. that's how you get cops to leave you alone. Go back to the park and get some more shots and let us know how things work out. ;-)
Prison exteriors also have strong restrictions..... authorities will certainly investigate if one is too close. Best to obtain authorization when shooting chain gangs or architecture.

Then we can get some pictures of Slippy in orange garb.
A friend of mine wanted to shhot some pictures of the outside of a prison, so she drove down this access road, parked and walked up to the top of a hill with a clear view of the prison. She started taking pictures. Within 5 minutes she was confronted by an officer who had his hand on his weapon. She found out later that at least two of the tower guards had her in the crosshairs of their rifles.
They confiscated her film, read her the riot act and told her not to come back. They were worried that she was scouting for potential weak points in the security or, she was some nutjob gonna open fire on the prison.
OK, I'll chance being met at the airport by the sheriff. Besides, some of his prisoners had purdy mouths. He definitely had me in his sights. I love the expression on his face!
I'll wait until I'm back home, and if I have some spare time I might try to look up an email address for where this giy works and send him the photo. :-D

Perhaps you might consider liaising with the authorities in question, and ask them direct questions as to what (if any) regulations you were breaking, and then share this knowledge with us.
Just curious, had these not been convicts and a sherif but rather a couple would you still shoot? Reason why I ask is it appears judging from this photo they were trying to maintain some sort privacy camped under that tree which is what most people tend to do when they want some privacy in a public place. I know it's 100% legal to shoot this, but personally I tend to avoid shooting people who are making an attempt to be private but that's just me. Anyway, just curious as to what others feel about that.

LOL, get serious. You have no idea what the surroundings are like from my crop, LOL! What a joke! :-D
Heh, just to let you know, they were front row, stage-side. But I do see you're trying to stir the pot for a bit of squeeky-wheel fun. Have at it.

Did you give him your name? If not, print a copy of this and send it to his boss with the date and time indicated. Anonymously of course. That frown deserves a reward, one way or another. If they both thought you were press, he'll sit well with the boss. I've seen that type of face. Usually when someone sees a cockroach or has to clean a very dirty toilet.

Woah - first time I've seen Slippy get serious and retaliate. Ahhh... But the :-D smiley let him down....
