I've seen pics of "ring flash" mods for the Sony DSC-F717 where they used aluminium paper to reflect the flash backwards and onto a doughnut-shaped container lined with aluminium wrappings.
Theoretically you could use a similar concept, i.e. putting a reflective surface (e.g. mirror or aluminium paper) in front of the flash to reflect it back onto a diffuse surface (e.g. white cardboard).
