It's only a problem if the thread continues for a couple of days, in which case the trick is to remember the last post you've read.
With more recent on top, you can just start at the bottom and scroll up.
If our fearless programmers have nothing better to do (Aug. 8, 2005?) they could probably create a "sort by" option...or maybe a way to "bookmark" the last-read post...
