I need to cut a small(about 1/16") hole in a wine glass. Anyone know the best way to go about this? I read a little about glass cutters but I'm not sure that they could cut a hole this small. I do have a dremel. Is there maybe a bit that will do this?
I would think a regular drill bit would work. I would just start very small and slow. And work my way up to the size I neded it but I think the key is drilling very slow.
Lots of good info there! Drilling a wine galss will be a challenge, because of the thinness and fragility. You'll want to support from the back (inside) of the glass. Use clay, molded to the shape of the inside of the glass, backed up by a piece of wood. Clamp the piece of wood to a table (or in a vise if you have one).
Do use a diamond bit (dremel tool works great as the tool) and remember that lubrication is essential.
got a friend in the dental field? Get him (her) to use a small diamond bur on their highspeed handpiece (drill). It automatically spits water and air on the drilling surface and even has a light. The burs may not go as big as you like but they have a nice variety or sizes and even shapes like round, straight and flared.
I would also think that if you lay the glass on a very soft surface (like the mentioned clay) and drill from the inside out (another advantage of the dental drill is it's angle of attack) you would be less likly to crush the glass and it would be more stable.
