I'm not sure what kind of event it is. Is it inside or out? Large groups of people or individuals? Action or posed shots?
I shoot an average of 6 events a week. A mixture of mostly inside and some outside. Sometimes candid shots and other times I ask a person or small group to pose for a shot. Unless it's a sporting event (I use the 70-200 f/4L) I always use a single lens. Ir's my Sigma 24-70 EX DG. I also always have the Canon 580 flash on with it aiming mostly up with the little white refector pulled out for a softer bounce.
Most of mine are lectures, lunch and dinners, meetings and social GTG's. In my situation changing lenses is a pain and I never have felt I needed any other lens. The secret is not to be shy about moving around, directing the poses and being a polite papparrazi.
