I am new this site and I am trying to understand the rules for basic editing. Is converting to grey scale a legal method for converting to black and white? Is adjusting saturation a legal method to convert to Black and white?

I am using Paint Shop Pro 11.

yes - I suggest maintaining RGB mode while using desaturation. This gives you more to work with yet still appears black and white.

EDIT: The main rule of thumb here is that edits are done globally.

Here's a tutorial using Photoshop Elements. The recommended method in this tutorial is removing hue using layers. You can probably perform the equivalent using your PSP 11.

Great, so using a channel mix layer is a legal edit in a basic editing challenge. Great, it looks much better this way than just dropping saturation.
