I have noticed that sometimes the number of photos remaining changes. I had a real shock. The camera said I had 125 remaining, then it jumped to 225. I thought I had lost 100 photos. I hadnt luckily. And before any asks, I didnt change files sizes and anything that would cause that. I have now noticed this twice.
Is it a bug with the camera software? Has anyone else noticed this?
The number of photos remaining changes if you change the ISO settings. Well it does on mine anyway. The higher you set the ISO the less photos you have remaining.
It isn't just the ISO that causes this. For jpegs especially file sizes can change dramatically from one image to another simply because each photo has a different amount of color and detail. This is normal.
Cameras base the remaining shots on the file size of the last shot taken and if that shot has a lot of detail then it will make a larger file and the camera's remaining shots will go down dramatically, until you take another shot with less detail.
Are you shooting in a creative zone or manual? I believe the camera chooses the ISO when using the creative modes.
I really dont think it has any thing to do with the ISO, as this only really changes the value by about 1. EG ISO 200, 125 exp, ISO 800 124 exp.
In my original posting, I stated that I GAINED 100 shots. It jumped from 125 to 225. I guess that file size can change the amount of shots remaining. I haven't seen that on my previous camera, and haven't noticed it on the 300D. However, I would have thought that you would normally lose and not gain. I have also only noticed this twice. Would it not be changing all the time if it was filesize dependant?
I know my old dc3400 used to at times gain photo's the more I took, but never such a huge jump..
maybe the camera learns the sizes of photo's you take (prolly 100% wrong but a guess)

I read this thread at the weekend and have kept an eye on the shots remaining over the last couple of days. I haven't noticed anything like the jump experienced but only the usual readjustment as you take shots. The Canon jpeg algorithm seems to be very well implemented and the file sizes vary between 1.8 & 3Mb in jpeg L capture, this gives rise to the small 'jump' seen.
ISO 100: 100 pictures left
ISO 200: 95 left
ISO 400: 89 left
ISO 800: 78 left
ISO 1600: 68 left
ISO 3200: 58 left
The ISO setting makes a big swing for me. I've seen it swing more than that -- maybe because it was also including data about my last photo taken. The last photo currently contains a lot of clear blue sky.
