I've messes around and discovered a new trick to using Noise Ninja and thought I'd pass it along.
This morning, I've been playing with some of my old Coolpix 8700 files (the Industrial Nude series) tryin to reduce some of the noise in the image. I found out that most of the noise is luminance noise in the darker parts of the image. I can remove it with Noise Ninja, but I start making Susan look plasticy.
Layer mask to the rescue.
First I duplicate the first layer. On the new layer I ran Noise Ninja. I set it full strenght to let it get rid of all the noise. It did and left me with a noiseless plastic girl.
Now, since I've noticed that most of the noise is in the shadows, I can mask off the highlight areas, since they don't need that much noise reduction.
Thanks to Bear_Music I'd heard of using to select the highlight. I did and then created a layer mask. Cool, now the shadows are nosieless and my model looks like a real girl again.
But, there is a little noise in the highlight. Easy enough to fix. While still on the layer mask, Hope someone finds this helpful. I sure did :-)
I like how simple the two layer masking steps are. I would have spent a lot more time painting the layer mask by hand. I'll have to give it a try. Thanks for sharing!

Is this a tool that is only available is PS CS? I am using Elements and when I do what I think it is you are saying it just moves the layer around while not selecting anything. Any ideas? If I figure this part out I will come back and ask about the white fill thing next.

Elements (last I checked) does not have this shortcut enabled.
