Very happy with myself. I came second in the 'Open Subject' section last night at my local Camera Club competition.
I entered this image:
However the entry was 1024x768px
The Open Subject section of the comp was a mix of prints and digital (projected on a screen), colour and B&W images with a total of 52 entries.
It's an extended version of this one:
The club rules are such that if your image isn't 1024x768 you MUST put in on a black background, so I opted to make the background part of the image.
I am aware of the issues with the male looking directly at the camera and the designer underwear label, but these are mistakes I will learn from in the future.
You may now shower me will well wishes and congratulations......as I'm sure I won't be reaching these dizzy heights on DPC! ;-)
The "seam" where you extended the image is noticeable. Instead of using the color-wheel black, you should sample the actual background color, and paint with that. Also, using a large, soft brush will help avoid the line.
One test that I use to see if I'm going to have a line is to open the Levels dialog box, and play around with the sliders. If you dramatically brighten the mid-tones, any mis-match in the background will show immediate. Just cancel the dialog box.

Thanks for that, nice tip. To be honest I didn't know it was there, and it certainly wasn't noticable of the projection last night.

I bet you are very happy and so you should be, this year in my club I have been in the top 6 (this is the only places that score points) 6 times coming 1st twice, and it is the best feeling ever, our print comps only get between 30 and 45 entreis depending if it is open or a themed comp.
So very well done.
You say you have issues with the male looking directly into the camera and the underwear lable - I like this it adds a further dimension to the image, if he was looking away IMHO you wouldn't have such a strong focal point in the image.
Just my thoughts - as I have always said to my fellow club members and a few people here photography is supposed to be fun, and in the first instance for the photographer, if I take a shot and I like it I dont give 2 hoots what a judge/other people say, it may sound harsh but thats me, plus I will only put an image infront of a judge/other people who will comment on it if I like it.
Again well done and hope you get more images up there.

I agree with you. There're not my issue, just comments left for the original shot.
Is that a digital image or a scan from film? I'm interested because it looks a lot like film. Just wondering because I am considering shooting black and white with film again. Thanks.

Digital image. Taken with the D50 in my kitchen....or is that studio?
PurpleFire.....
Me too.....errrr almost.... I just joined a local camera club and this was my second competition. I entered this in the open color (along with my black cat yawning photo)...
I got Honorable Mention out of 34 entries. (The yawning photo made it into the last cut)....I'm elated.
I truely think the only reason it was in contention is the judge this week was a highschool photography teacher. What he liked about the photo was it contained alot of information. (i.e. he could see by the stripes the duration of time this solder had, by the ribbons he could see his accomplishments, and that he was retired from his career. He told me that the photo would not have had the same effect if he could have seen the soldier's face)
