I took the advice and recalibrated my monitor, the contrast and brightness levels, went back to the Dreams and Nightmares challenge and looked again.
WOW! WHAT A DIFFERENCE IT MADE! Some of my 3's and 4's got bumped up to 8's and might possibly make 9's before I'm done! I had no idea my monitor was set so dark!
hopefully more people will go out there and do what you did
I hope so...my score is desperately counting on it!! lol
I can definately tell by the difference in comments I have received on my dreams and nightmares submission that there is a big difference in how it is viewed on different monitors.

By which method of recalibrating are you speaking of to recalibrating your monitor.
I hope I didn't make the wrong choice....I'll check it out after voting, but I made my decision on the Nightmare challenge based on what my shot looked like on my work computer....after this thread I maybe shoulda tried to calibrate that moniter....
I am battling the calibration thing really badly :(
I found a greyscale strip someone pointed me to and even on the highest settings I couldn't get eother of my monitors to see all the bands.
I am finding it frustrating, as if I can't see what I am producing I can assume that MOST people do not see anything like I produce.
However, I have found a solution .....
Next challenge that has a lot of black in it I am going to invite everyone over to my place, coffee and cookies provided, and they can vote using my monitor.
It shouldn't be a hard journey for anyone, I am only 30 mins from Brisnbane (Australia) airport :)

The gray strip on the bottom was not really defined for me and in another thread they linked to an even better gray strip. I have a Gateway LE500 monitor and pressed my little buttons on the front and played with the contrast and brightness until I could see all the bars. It has made a HUGE difference in a lot of the photos and my scoring as a result! My monitor's brightness was set really low, I had no idea it was so dark!
I have a Samsung monitor, 17". It's a 750, or 705 or something, I can't tell any more as I turned them both black *laugh* (Very easy to do it and look like black originals, if anyone is interested drop me a message).
Even with brightness at 100% and then stuffing around with contrast, neither monitor can get to the point of seeing all the bars in the white-black strip.
May well just be bad monitors. Bad monitors, bad!!!! *spank*
