When I made my entry I knew that I hadn't really hit the HC look with this...
but I ran out of time to shoot another. I was actually pleased with the result considering the full tonal range of the shot.
Not an outtake of my original shoot, but after the deadline, I decided to try again with the same subject and came up with this...
Do you think it would have done better?
After all of the discussion of what is really high contrast did any of you try again? If so post what you wish you had shot before the deadline.
I think it would have done better. Not a whole lot but a little bit. It's certainly a better angle, but the bridge still needs to be more in the picture and the tree takes up too much of the negative space. It's hard to say how to improve it further without being there though :)
Thanks philup. I thought about pushing the HC in the original too but I was afraid it would look like I just slid the contrast bar. I like your edit.
I went for the retake because I wanted to get a pic that was more HC straight out of the camera. I did very little pp other than the conversion to B&W.

I understand about the pushing the HC! But sometimes "pushing it" means a higher score. People want different, keep that in mind!
I think it's a great composition. But I think it suffers from the same thing my entry did. It seems to have a full tonal range and not the dramatic black black and white whites the a typical HC shot would have.
