Its worth spending the time to set up a colour managed work flow, so that you know what you see is as close to what you expect to get.
To do this, you need software that is aware of profiles, and also you need printer profiles for the particular printer/ ink/ paper combination you are using.
You really need your monitor calibrated too, otherwise you are starting from a random point and have no idea of what colours you are really sending to the printer to compare.
