This image went nearly the entire time and almost finished with no comments. It's my entry to high contrast.
I'm just curious, who noticed the spider in the flower? And if you had, would you have voted it higher? Or lower?
I feel like those who voted on it missed it completely. Though I base that on the lack of comments more than anything. So let me know what you think. :-)
I think you may have lost some votes on the cnatrast issue. While there is contrast betweent he subject and the background, the contrast doesn't really make or break the photo. JMHO
I saw the spider. The image itself is OK. Technicals are all right, but not exceptional. Its strength is lighting and tonality. The spider is its most important element of viewer interest.
The only notable technical flaw is haloing around the spider's legs. Unfortunately since that element attracts the most attention that flaw becomes more apparent.
Several factors hurt this image in scoring. One, it is not really high contrast so DNMC votes probably brought down the score. Two, perspective is mundane. A different angle or crop would work better. Three, the rose itself is not well formed and therefore uninteresting to viewers.
Because it is not easily dominant in the frame the spider does not add a lot of wow factor. Insects generally are supporting elements in images like yours and cannot carry the whole composition.
There really isn't a lot "bad" about your image, but there is not a lot to attract the viewer either. The overall quality of DPC submissions is generally good. It is easy for more "normal" images to get lost in the wow factor of the others.
I did not see the spider, but I did not think the wilted flower was appealing nor was the photo high contrast. I am new to DCP and digital photo, so I tend not to make too many comments.
