Do any of you have some suggestions on where I could pick up a wide range of costumes and props?

I've a project I want to give a try but it'll require having a fairly extensive selection of themed outfits and I've checked around the Halloween stores and those are just too plastic or entrenched in the holiday.

I can't for the life of me figure out where I could get decently made costumes for a very very reasonable price. I didn't have much luck at Goodwill either as those tended to run more towards the Halloween than what I'm envisioning. I have no sewing skills so making my own isn't an option.

My two biggest needs would be low price/affordability and range in the themes. I'd love to start building a collection that spans the entire spectrum, from astronaut to zookeeper and everything in between.

Props are a bit easier, I've found a few things at Goodwill and the Dollar store but they were mainly smaller and somewhat cheap looking - which works but I really need a treasure trove that I can visit time and again. I was thinking one of those consignment/antique shops but some of that stuff can run into some fairly spendy numbers.

Any ideas on where I can get started?

Well do you need to own, most people just rent as required. Either look for a costume shop in your area, or find out what the local theator groups use. Often the bigger schools have a area where they have collected and kept props for their theator preformances.

That link was great, the prices aren't really too bad. Unfortunately the sizes run a bit towards the smaller end, so I'll have to augment with another place so I can use a wider model selection. But that's an excellent start, thank you.

I do need to own if I decide to take the project to the next level, so renting isn't an option for me at this point.

Freecycle and Craigslist are two I would start with if they cover your area.

Yard Sales! Though I will admit that you will find mostly children's costumes and props, I have seen some adult costumes as well. I've managed to collect an array of children's costumes and props, as well as some gorgeous girl's "portrait" dresses from friends and yard sales at almost no cost.
